Join the Asia Society Texas Center in exploring the unexpected during the 3rd Annual Turkish Music Festival! this festival promises to be a blast on Friday, January 17th!
The first night will highlight the thousand-year connection between Turkish music and that of the surrounding cultures of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. This night’s concert event will feature Berklee professor Beth Bahia Cohen, master of regional bowed instruments; Carpe Diem String Quartet, one of America's premiere "indie" string quartets; and Hoppa Project musicians.
The festival continues on Saturday, January 18th, and will feature some of the most important Turkish composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as Turkish folk and traditional music. The program will be centered around legendary Turkish composer and educator Ilhan Baran, who passed away last year. The concert will include Baran’s Transformations for Piano Trio, folk and traditional music that inspired him, and works by the next generations of composers who were influenced by him.
Hoppa Project, directed Erberk Eryılmaz and Laura Krentzman, aims to promote music from Eastern Europe and the Middle East by performing the music of the region with a wide range of styles from folk to newly commissioned contemporary music. Hoppa is an exclamation that is commonly used in the region to say, “Come on! Let’s go!” This is the attitude we feel is -needed to share what we love. Hoppa Project brings Western and Eastern-trained musicians together in order to discover cultural connections.
